Well, I’ve got some good news and some bad news. Which would you like first? Just kidding, your opinion doesn’t matter as this column was already written a week ago. I’ll just go ahead and give you the bad news first. You can handle it. Here goes: Starting June 1, we will be closing two hours earlier on Fridays.
That wasn’t so bad, was it? Oh right, I mentioned something about good news. Well, the good news is that starting June 1, we will be opening for three extra hours on Saturdays!
Here’s what our new hours will look like:
Monday – Thursday: 10 a.m – 7 p.m.
Friday: 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.
Saturday: 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
As far as the reason why we’re changing, for me, this was a long time coming. While I’ve had this idea for a while, I needed to step back and look at the numbers to see if a change would really be beneficial to our community, and that a year would be a good length of time to examine our possibilities. During that time, a number of parents voiced concern that there was ‘nothing to do’ in Hamilton on weekend afternoons, leading me to think that extended Saturday hours could provide a better opportunity for working families to get to the library without it cutting into dinner time.
The thing that really led me to believe this was a good idea were the statistics. Looking at a year’s worth of checkouts and walk-ins, the busiest 3-hour shift of the week was on Saturdays. The slowest? You guessed it – Friday evenings! Between all this data, this decision was made easily, but not lightly. I want to apologize to the few of you who preferred to stop in on Friday evenings. I hope you find another opportunity during the week to visit us and that we didn’t mess up anyone’s weekly routine too drastically.
