Name! That! Room!

Our Family Literacy Center is going through an identity crisis!  In addition to the name mentioned in the previous sentence, it is also known as the ‘Adult Literacy Center,’ ‘Story Street,’ and ‘That Other Meeting Space’ (TOMS), but not for long.

Aside from Storytime, a few monthly crafts, and the occasional tutoring session, TOMS is not being used for its intended purpose, and we’re looking to change that.  With the popularity and emphasis of STEAM education as well as the interest we’ve seen regarding children’s crafts (and the inconvenient storage of supplies on our 2nd floor), we are soon renovating the space to include storage for various robotics kits and specialty crafting tools.  We will use these items to create more innovative and entertaining programs for school-aged children that focus on creativity, collaboration, and communication.

To plan this project effectively, we needed to give the space a proper name.  Initial brainstorming sessions left us with the placeholder ‘Space Space,’ for reasons that are neither interesting nor concise.  Eventually, we settled on ‘Innovation Station,’ but soon found out that the Colgate Bookstore has a similarly-named children’s area called the ‘Imagination Station.’  Great minds really do think alike! Our next new name was ‘Imaginarium,’ but that kept generating questions about Heath Ledger’s final starring role. Finally (hopefully) the name of the new space is the ‘Co-Laboratory.’

While the Friends of the Library are excited to help fund this project, they aren’t the only ones chipping in.  We received a generous contribution from the Sigma Chi of Colgate Foundation for robotics kits to help get this project moving.  We also received a LEGO Mindstorms kit from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. It seems we’re all excited to bring this to our community – thanks to everyone for chipping in and look for the Co-Laboratory in the Spring of 2019!
