It’s September, and do you know what that means? No, not back to school season. No, not even fall (even if it is). In public libraries, September means only one thing: National Library Card Signup Month!
To the readers of this column that do not have a library card: what are you waiting for? A library card is your ticket to millions of books, audiobooks, graphic novels, movies, magazines, music recordings, video games, museum passes, ice skates (seasonally), American Girl dolls and more! Not to mention our online offerings – your card gets you access to tens of thousands of eBooks, downloadable audiobooks, streaming movies and music on all your portable electronic devices. And that’s just at our branch! Other MidYork libraries offer snowshoes, robotics kits, power tools, telescopes, cake pans, and other oddities throughout Madison, Oneida, and Herkimer counties. To answer your next question, yes, your card from us is good at those locations too.
And now with almost 30 of the 43 member libraries fine free (like us), and some automatically renewing your overdue material (like us), there’s never been a better time to join. All you need to do to sign up is provide a proof of address. Kids can sign up as early as their parents or guardians wish.
Speaking of kids, all children under the age of 18 that sign up for a new library card get free ice cream from Maxwell’s Chocolates and Ice Cream. How sweet is that (pun intended)? That’s not a promotion just for Library Card Signup Month, that’s just a thing Maxwell’s does year-round to help promote literacy in our community. Thanks, Maxwell’s, for being so cool (pun intended)!
To the readers of this column that DO have a library card: sorry for wasting your time. You probably knew this already.
