This may not come as a surprise to you, but here at the library we keep all kinds of statistics. From reference transactions to weather conditions during programs, we make a note of just about everything. This obsessive record-keeping isn’t due to boredom or because we love statistical analysis (which is often true anyway), the State requires us to keep track of certain things. Okay, so maybe the State doesn’t want to know what the weather conditions were, that one’s just for us.
Whatever the reason may be, sometimes these statistics are just begging to tell us something. For an example, let’s take a look at last month’s overall checkouts. In March, we circulated 4,010 physical materials, which is up about 500 from February. This is common, being that February is a notoriously short month, so looking at those two months really isn’t fair to Feb. Maybe in a Leap Year, but not 2018. A better comparison would be with last March, during which we checked out 3,489 items – so that’s great!
The most interesting statistic I’ve gathered recently is that downloadable audiobooks are being checked out more than their physical counterparts in the last 9/10 months! That means our patrons are Overdrive wizards! Based on that number, we can make the decision to expand our digital offerings even further.
Why am I telling you this? Isn’t this a bit too jargony for a newspaper column? Well, to try and thank you for coming in and using our services! If our numbers increased then we must be doing something right. There’s always room for improvement though, so feel free to stop in and let us know what we can do to make your library even better.
